New York State’s Abandoned Wells Priority Plugging List

This list includes some 4,722 old oil and gas wells that NY DEC would plug if only they had the resources.

Of course, why New York should be burdened with these messes left behind by oil and gas companies remains an unanswered question.

The list includes well names & numbers, depths, company names, and longitude-latitude coordinates. Significant numbers of them are situated in Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins and Yates Counties.

Abandoned Wells PAGE 125

In this passage, the E.P.A. notes that abandoned oil and natural gas wells can be conduits for fluids like drilling wastewater to migrate up to freshwater aquifers. The graphic on the next page illustrates this potential.
