Rally to Stop TPP – NYC, Jan. 26

Stop TPP2
WHY IS THIS MOMENT URGENT? TPP negotiations are expected to conclude within 2 months! Congress is holding hearings on the 27th about new legislation that will apply Fast Track rules to TPP, prohibiting Congress from amending the agreement’s most environmentally disastrous provisions. President Obama promoted TPP in his State of the Union address and is working with Congressional republicans to STOP it! Only MASS public outcry will kill this ecocidal trade deal!

On the first day of the first ever New York round of TPP negotiations — on the day before Congress’ Fast Track hearings — we say:

  • NO TO EXTREME ENERGY!
  • NO TO EXPANDED RIGHTS FOR CORPORATE POLLUTERS!
  • NO TO TPP!

WHY PROTEST TPP?
TPP = The Trans-Pacific Partnership – a 12 country international corporate rights agreement disguised as a trade deal.

TPP Is currently being negotiated between the US and 11 Pacific Rim nations including Japan, the world’s largest importer of liquid natural gas (LNG). Under TPP, Japanese corporate investors will be able to sue the US government for unlimited sums based on the NY fracking ban, demanding fully compensation for loss of expected future profits! This will put pressure on NY to overturn our fracking ban and will discourage other states from banning fracking. TPP will also eliminate the community approval process for LNG export terminals shipping LNG to TPP member nations like Japan!

TPP-style investor rights provisions have already been used to:

  • Challenge Quebec’s fracking ban
  • Challenge Germany’s new legislation against nuclear power plants
  • Extort El Salvador for refusing a mining project that would have poisoned the river that is the nation’s largest source of drinking water
  • Force Canada to accept banned pesticides and fuel containing toxic additives

TPP is the LARGEST TRADE AGREEMENT IN HISTORY and includes 40% of the global economy, including many of the worlds biggest fossil fuel users, the home countries of many extractive industry giants, and some of the countries hardest hit by ecologically disastrous extraction projects. from Canada’s tar sands to Peru’s Camisea gas pipeline.

In addition to promoting expanded investment in fossil fuel extraction, TPP member nation Malaysia is pushing for the agreement to lower tariffs on the nation’s palm oil, a false solution, high carbon footprint biofuel by destroying rainforests and wiping out endangered wildlife including orangutans and Malayan tigers.
