Is the IOGCC, Created by Congress in 1935, Now a Secret Oil and Gas Lobby?
April 12, 2016Scientists Find Fracking Contaminated Wyoming Water After EPA Halted Study
April 14, 2016Word is that the New York State DEC will make a decision on the Constitution Pipeline 401 water quality certificate within a week. If we can stop this permit, we can stop the pipeline! Write or call Governor Cuomo today and urge him to deny this permit.
Under section 401 of the federal Clean Water Act, the pipeline cannot be built unless DEC certifies that the state’s strict water quality standards will not be violated. The Constitution Pipeline will endanger 277 streams and important water supplies. For this and other reasons, this permit must be denied.
You can contact Governor Cuomo using this link or call him at 877-235-6537.
Just say “I write to ask that you and the Department of Environmental Conservation deny the 401 Water Quality Certificate for the Constitution Pipeline project” or use language from one of the letters below:
Dear Governor Cuomo,
A great lead up to EARTH DAY would be a credible gesture to protect the earth. Please direct the DEC to deny the 401 water quality certificate for the Constitution Pipeline today. You have been made aware many times by many citizens why this project is so bad for NYS. To reiterate some of those concerns: Taking of private property through eminent domain, all for the benefit of Texas billionaires, is just plain wrong. Cabot and Williams have terrible safety records and should not be allowed in the state. The applicant plans substandard waterway crossings, not following DEC guidelines (some 270+ waterways would be trenched, in addition to the cutting of some 700,000 plus trees- basically our planet’s “lungs” – this massive tree cutting promotes erosion and flooding). Methane from fracked gas infrastructure is cooking the planet our children will inherit. CH4 is a much worse greenhouse gas than CO2, trapping heat 86 times more potently that CO2, during the short time span (20 years) that we have to slow global warming. The AMA says fracked gas infrastructure makes us sick. Please listen to Dr. David Carpenter, head of the Institute for Health and the Environment at SUNY Albany – he has testified to the harms to human and animal health posed by fracking and its associated infrastructure. The Constitution Pipeline is a bad idea. Further, when Dr. Zucker said he would not want his family living near fracking, I don’t think he meant -“but the infrastructure is OK.”
The Constitution Pipeline is a sham in terms of “helping the environment because methane is cleaner than other fuels.” According to Cornell scientists Robert Howarth and Anthony Ingraffea fracked gas is dirtier than coal. It would make NYS complicit in the ongoing warming of the planet, instead of being part of the solution.
Say NO to Constitution Pipeline today.
Dear Governor Cuomo,
Please – PLEASE – direct your DEC to do the right thing and deny the 401 water quality certificate for the Constitution Pipeline NOW. You have been made aware many times by many citizens why this project is so bad for NYS and beyond. To reiterate some of those concerns: 1) taking of private property through eminent domain, all for the benefit of the applicants – neither of which has an exemplary record of safety (Cabot is synonymous with the cause of well water contamination in Dimock, PA. 2) the applicant plans substandard waterway crossings, not following DEC guidelines (some 270+ waterways would be crossed, in addition to the cutting of some 700,000 plus trees- basically our planet’s “lungs” – this massive tree cutting promotes erosion and flooding) 3) It encourages the extraction of methane, a much worse greenhouse gas than CO2. It perpetuates a problem that the US has contributed greatly too: the increase in fugitive methane, trapping heat 86 times more potently that CO2, during the short time span (20 years) that we have to stop or at least slow down the progression of global warming. 4) Accompanying pipelines are compressor stations and gas fired power plants – both huge polluters. People living close to compressors get sick. The research on this sad phenomenon is not extensive but it is growing. Please listen to Dr. David Carpenter, head of the Institute for Health and the Environment at SUNY Albany – he has testified to the harms to human and animal health posed by fracking and its associated infrastructure. All the way around, the Constitution Pipeline is a very bad idea. Further, when Dr. Zucker said he would not want his family living near fracking, I don’t think he meant -“but the infrastructure is OK.”
The Constitution Pipeline is a sham in terms of “helping the environment because methane is cleaner than other fuels.” That’s a lie – backed up by current research about the harms of methane and the testimony of Robert Howarth and Anthony Ingraffea of Cornell. It would make NYS complicit in the ongoing warming of the planet, instead of being part of the solution.
We call on you Governor Cuomo to be a leader for the health of NYS and the climate, and make to make this call, now. It’s the right thing to do and the we are counting on you.
